It should be noted that at present this requires you to run x-windows 
-- an entirely different user interface and something very few Mac 
owners are going to be much interested in doing.

I like and use MarinerWrite from www.marinersoft.com.

You might also look at ThinkFree Office ($50) available from 
thinkfree.com or your local CompUSA store. It excels at MS Office 
compatibility but is slower and klunkier, but again it's almost 
perfectly compatible with MS and it's 1/10th the retail price.

I have heard that WordPerfect 3.5e can be made to function in Classic 
with the OS 9 patches but I haven't tried it myself.
