In the installer, when choosing a disk to install to, check "Erase disk and
format as..." and select the file system you want (probably HFS+). With this
option checked, the installer will format the hard disk before installing,
eliminating your problem. If you have any important files, boot from a Mac
OS 9 CD and back them up first.
