I noticed in my case that Mac Mail was using Mac.com as the SMTP server
since we both had a Mac.com address and Mail sets itself up right away
for that account. When we used that set up the send and receive worked
fine. Received with Earthlink and sent out via Mac.com. When we
switched it over to the Earthlink account server we got the same
message you are getting.

If you have another email account such as Mac.com you could try those
settings in the SMTP server box.

If that doesn't work I might suggest that you contact Earthlink via
their 'live chat' option. That's what finally cleared us up in our
mess. We never could send via Earthlink until they went home with
their iMac and used their usual account dial-up connection. Using the
other servers worked in our case.

As a possible alternative you might also try your Earthlink mail
account via their web based option. My friend ended up doing that when
they are at work and leaves the messages on until they get home and
then downloads them local. If that makes sense.

Good Luck,

Ken
