Mike, the tray-loading CD-ROM drives in the earlier iMacs are the 
same as the CD-ROM drives in the Powerbooks back then, IIRC. So 
you'll need to look for a drive that can replace the one in 
Powerbooks, which is what I suspect your Mac shops were pricing for 
you.
