10.2 comes with two items that will help keep the machine running
smoothly all by itself. The first is the fsck trick I detail above and
which should be run after major system updates -- or every few months,
whichever comes first.

The second is the new improved Disk Utility that comes with the OS.
Simply run "Repair Permissions" every now and again (I do it about once
a month). These tools are excellent "preventative maintenance" for your
Mac.

I haven't used Drive 10 at all so I can't comment on how good or bad
that might be, but you might still need a third-party bootable utility
to defrag depending on your usage (defragging isn't quite as big an
issue as it used to be).

For that, I can highly recommend Disk Warrior/Plus Optimizer (be sure
to get the CD version that has both!). It boots into OS 9 but it is
perfectly safe on OS X and does the job beautifully.

I have also had good luck with Norton Utilities (which I have via
SystemWorks 2), BUT and I cannot stress this enough DO NOT install the
program on your hard drive!! That was a *disaster.* Running it from the
CD seems perfectly fine and has never given me problems (though I
haven't had to do that from 10.2.3 yet).
