In most cases you can verify a flyback failure by disconnecting the CRT EHT cap (discharge first), then measure the caps connector resistance to common with a DVM. Most faulty ones read around 40 - 50K ohms, good should read infinity. Some (very few) that read infinity break down in use causing similar symptoms. The flyback can easily be replaced with a soldering iron and a good desoldering tool. No boards need to be removed, but the video board on the CRT neck needs to be slipped off and manoeuvred to release the focus and G2/screen wires. I have often looked at spares available from NEI, but they are always more expensive, as is their shipping to Europe. I have used iMac flyback transformers from Power Components bv in the Netherlands, http://www.powercomponents.nl, and from Lavinci Luca in Italy, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Power Components have a 100 Euro minimum order, I think last charged 25 GBP and 10 GBP postage to the UK, total equivalent to about 60 USD. Shipping may be more to the USA. They are quality boxed LG original spares. Lavanci Luca sell much cheaper, 19 GBP and 9 GBP postage, no minimum order, but I have had quality problems and goods have had to be returned at our cost. They source non original spares (hence cheaper) from China, but have been repeatedly sold wrongly labelled parts. Here in the UK non AASP sources sell an exchange analogue board for 119 GBP, plus 2 lots of shipping are involved, so replacing the flyback transformer is cheaper, and takes almost the same time as board swapping and setting up. Here a rev. a or b 233 MHz iMac sells used for around 200 - 230 GBP, so spares expenditure is limited by its value. Steve Bell -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
