I had a similar problem with my Rev C. For over a year, many times the icons would start flashing and I couldn't open my programs. Sometimes the machine would start dinging too. I never could find anything about this on internet searches, and I was always trying to fix it with various methods, applications, RAM, battery, etc. Then the screen started coming up very dark and fuzzy, and would lighten up as the computer "warmed up." Finally it wouldn't come up any more (stayed black), even though I could hear the computer working. I asked Apple if I could attach a different monitor to the computer, and that particular tech person said No. Since I had an old PC monitor and the adapter, I decided to try it anyway with the help of my TV repairman! Now the iMac sits to the side of my desk (you can't even see that the back panel is off), and the monitor is right in front. I've had no problems for over a month.
