In my case, .mac makes a lot of sense for two vital purposes:

1. Web mail. When I'm mobile with my iBook I can either use my Motorola
c332 and do back-ups (by emailing encrypted copies of my work) by
connecting to a dial- up service or the same by Wardriving (if I chance
upon an upon an open network, which, conveniently, there are a few at
my favorite work areas such as the park where I often take my rugrat.)

2. Off- site back- up. Backing- up to a CD or tape drive or such is
fine- i do that regularly, as well- but unless it's not in the same
location as your machines, you risk losing everything in case (Ghod
forbid) of catastrophe.

Of course, there are many free or lower- cost entities that offer these
types of services individually or separately, but none, IMO, that have
the solvency of Apple Computer, Inc. My work and time are valuable and
I don't like taking unnecessary chances. I subscribed to an off- site
back- up service a few years ago and they went belly- up in the night
along with my pre-paid fee and data.

Additionally, .mac's "Backup" utility included in the price is the only
one integrated with my Mac and OS X and certainly the most convenient-
it does it for me automatically every night while I sleep. There are
some other features that, while extremely helpful, are not so vital,
but worthwhile, nonetheless. iCal is one such feature. With iCal, my
wife and I can remotely check, modify and update each other's
schedules, which really has made life easier in our rather hectic lives.

For me, these services are well worth the 27 cents a day.
