I don't understand this. With every Appleworks/Clarisworks upgrade I've done, the default is to append the new version number to the file name when opening documents created with the previous version. Even if you make no changes, it prompts you to save the new file, with the new file name.
Additionally, if you do upgrade to Appleworks 6, if you choose the "save as" option, one of the options it gives you is to save as Appleworks 5.0. I haven't tried the feature, but I have saved as MS Word for windows. Should work okay if you want to save as AW5. BTW, I'm using AW6 with the upgrade under Jaguar. 10.2.4 I think.
