The maximum is 500mA at 5V.  I suppose some equipment might not 
source this much but I haven't heard of any.

One problem with many USB implementations is that devices report they 
need is 500mA regardless of the actual need.  This means that an 
un-powered hub can't be used as the system will calculate an overload 
even though none really exists.
