All of the "white" (that's snow in Appleese) iMac I'm aware of, have both USB and Firewire so adding external peripherals is easy. Could be either CD ROM of CD RW, depends on what was specified. It was available with either. A good place to start would be to use the Apple System Profiler, which will tell you everything about it's current configuration. If she has OS 9 or earlier it's in the "Control panels". If it's OS X it's located under the apple icon. Click about this computer, then the "more info" link.
