I answer in the text :-)

Well, amazingly is a very heavy word to use here. My reason for complaining
is that when I get home from work and push the mouse to get the screen going
and the screensaver to disappear, it can take up to 15 seconds before I can
do anything. That is longer than it takes to wake up my iBook. The reason is
that I am running a moving desktop () running the screen saver with Ken
Burns effect using a handful of photos and running 13 other apps for a
number of days, well my uptime is 5 days, so it is probably close to that.

This makes the SystemUIServer eat 1.7 GB of memory alone. I restarted Safari
yesterday, because I pushed cmd-q by accident, and it went down from 443 MB
Vsize to 90 now. At this moment, I have no less than 35 swapfiles open(=2.7
GB!). So, I guess you are right, it is Amazingly how well the system tackles
that load! But I am not impressed by the memory usage of the SystemUIServer
at all, and neither that of other applications. This is why I think I could
be doing better by quitting applications (and killing the SystemUIServer)
more often. I would love to have RAM enough to handle this kind of load -
incidentally, I have 12 GB in my AIX server at work, so I know the feeling
;-) - but given that I only have 512 MB in my iMac, I will get into some
trouble just stopping the screen saver. Somehow I find it ghastly that 512
MB is simply not enough for ordinary stuff.

On my iBook, I simply don't have the hard disk space for this, so there I
kill the SystemUIServer and restart my browsers every other day or so, as
they seem to be the worst RAM-eaters.

Hey if you are such a purist, you would never want to watch them on a small
screen like the iMac's anyway ;-) If I get a new DVD, I usually hook up my
iBook to my TV-set and watch it there, sometimes while surfing on my iMac, I
must admit ;-)

By the way, I must warn you about a thing that happened to me when I got my
iMac 17". Every night when I came home from work for at least two weeks
after I got it, I just sat down in front of the beauty and played with it,
most nights realizing at 2 am that I forgot to eat dinner - again, but that
I better get to bed. It is seriously addictive and loveable!

Cheers,

Kim
