I would concur with Robert's logic, Stationwagon man, I have an 800mhz iMac, running 10.1.5, and which requires zapping PRAM every so often. Apparently - according the AppleCare, it is very sensitive to static build up, even though it is protected with UPS & Power/telephone line surge protection. What gives? I don't know. However, eventhough our 17" G4 iMac's DVD burn capability is nice, DVDs are not cheap, and CD burning is our most important task. It performs that job very dependably & easily - even with static charge build-up.
I would concur with Robert's evaluation of the eMac. Great software. Solid machine. Nice (if not an absolutely stunning display), yet hopefully with OS 10.2 (not, 10.1.5, of which I am not at all satisfied with at all). Regarding 10.1.5, the quote I got from several Apple care reps over the phone was, "10.2 is what 10.1.5 was intended to be". Weak. But, the subject eMac is truly an all-in-one unit. And while it might take up more table sq. inches, you're not going to have one of your kids run a mechanical pencil through its glass screen. Something to think about, maybe. Likewise, you can move eMac from point A to point B without a stretcher (parts wiggling, hanging, like so many CNS encased bones) Sure, our 17" display is extraordinarily nice to look at (actually, it is bizarrely stunning) for our graphics work resulting in PDFs for www.knoxvillekids.com. However, eMac's display is still quite crisp, and I would also suggest it is really a great machine. Robert is correct, the eMac is 95% of what you will need. And ~ $1k less. Just make sure it has 10.2, not 10.1.5. I would ass-u-me that all the new models have Jag? Who knows? Just check.
