I managed to install OS 9 after OS X by simply copying the OS 9 installer's basic System folder to the drive, launching it as "classic" (which gave a couple of USB driver errors, but they go away later). Then I was able to run the OS 9 CD installer to "update" the OS 9 System I just copied. Later, when launching Classic under OS X, it will tell you that it needs to update some things in OS 9, and it works fine. Also, you should remember to run Software Update under OS 9 to bring everything up to date. It's much easier if your drive is partitioned, as then you can install or reinstall either one independently of the other, and if something goes wrong with one system, you have the other to fall back on, leaving the CD drive free to perform installations. You really should keep OS 9 somewhere on your drive, whether you use it on a regular basis or not. There are several "Carbon" programs (those which run under either system) that require OS 9 to install, even though the programs themselves can run under OS X.
