I've heard and also read great reviews of the Canon LiDE 30. However, They said it does outstanding color and clarity. Also, it was pretty handy that it was 'bus powered', so u didn't need a power adapter. I've also read that in the group of scanners that they reviewed (Macworld I believe it was - Feb. 03), it was the slowest of the bunch. Despite that, it was the "Macworld Pick" for scanners in that price range.
It might be good to try to find out how slow is slow for the reviewers. If they are reviewing against a bunch of other 2003 scanners, maybe slow is just the speed off a 2002 or 2001 scanner. With rebate I think you can find that scanner for $80. On the other hand, I've never used (to my knowledge) the Epson 1250.
