You can use either a ready made unit (numerous vendors) or just purchase and appropriate enclosure and install a HD of your choice in it. It's a great back up resource, with multiple Mac's it's the modern equivalent of "sneaker net" (walk the floppy across the room) . Just take the external HD to another machine and plug it in.

Do everything you can do on an internal drive, including boot from the external FW driver with all the later vintage Mac's with built in firewire. They make for great backup storage.
