I use external firewire drives in my work and they work great, when they
work. I've had both Maxtor and LaCie drives and they both sometimes lock up
my iMac G4 where the only alternative is to turn them off and reboot. I've
never lost any data doing this but it can be annoying especially if I'm on a
roll in the middle of an edit. Yes, they can be used as another drive except
Apple recommends having your program files on your internal hard drive and
saved work on the external drive. Another feature I like about the external
drives, you can "daisy-link" several drives. That is, each external drive
has an in and out port and can be linked together so that when one drive gets
full, you can start saving to the next one. I have three drives linked
together giving me more drive space for my video edits. Hope this helps.
You might also look into something relatively new called USB2 drives. I
don't know much about them but supposedly they work just as good as a
firewire drive.
