The only consideration is to remember the  your Summer 2000 iMac has no 
cooling fan. The new HD wants to be thermally friendly. Some of the 
faster HD's generate a lot of heat. Look for a replacement HD with 
comparable thermal characteristics to the OEM HD. (Most manufacturers 
have thermal operating temperatures on their web sites)

You're not going to have any heat related problems with the 40 GB drive, and you 
wouldn't have any with the 120 either.  Check http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ for reports 
on use of 120GB drives in fanless iMacs.  No reported problems.
