That's a good idea. I recommended a USB box as a convenient and inexpensive way to get access to his old data and programs after upgrading the drive. I use, for instance, a USB ZIP drive frequently and as a drive for occassionally accessing data it works quite well. I think adding FireWire to an early iMac (e.g. the Harmoni upgrade) is more trouble than the box is worth; the same money can get you a long way toward a used Rev B B&W that will both include firewire and have a better growth path: bigger monitor, multiple drives, PCI, etc. But I do like the dual Firewire/USB enclosure idea, except for the idea that one of these, again, is starting to approach being worth more than the drive (or the iMac for that matter) is worth.
