"Too slow" is in the eye of the beholder, but I've heard and seen many 
people running OS X (10.2) on "ancient" original iMacs and beige G3s 
with success. The secret, apparently, is to a) obey the rules of the 
machine (which in  the case of beige G3s include installing OS X on the 
first 8GB of the drive I believe) and b) LOTS OF RAM. As in "max it 
out."

And of course, if the machine doesn't have a native USB or FW card, 
it's a good idea to get one and install it.
