Hello - About a year and a half ago, I asked the generous folks here
for help for a friend relating to PC/Mac comp ability, and you were very
helpful. Now I would appreciate some advice for myself if this problem
sounds like anything you know about.
I bought a used iMac, my first, from someone I know, and I feel sure it
didn't have any known problems when I bought it, and I was told it hadn't
been used much. So I've had it over a year but only started using it two
months ago, mainly for e-mail and a few trips on the Internet. (I was using
an AOL free trial with dial-up, and everything was so slow, even with
graphics unselected, that I couldn't stand it, so mostly just checked
e-mail.)
Problem: My screen image has narrowed to a vertical image which extends
the full length (vertical) of the screen but is scrunched in from the sides
so much that it only takes up a few inches in the middle of the screen, from
top to bottom, sort of like the space between these x's.

The first couple of times it happened, it started out that way and then,
while it was on, it popped out to fill the whole screen again and stayed
that way till I turned it off, and then the next time I turned it on, it was
narrowed again. Now it doesn't pop out to full size anymore. (I've only
used it about six times in this condition. Since I can do most of what I
need on a computer at my office, I haven't had to solve the problem at home,
but now I want to do so.)
I actually could read email and write a short reply, with everything
scrunched up teeny-tiny but whole, if you know what I mean. In other words,
everything is still there, but it's getting smaller and more smooshed
together.
Oh, and right down the center of the screen there's the look of a stripe
of white light sort of shining through from behind the image. (Sounds
ominous to me.) A friend suggested
"rebuild the desktop," but doing that didn't affect it. That's all I've
tried. Not covered in my "iMac For Dummies" troubleshooting chapter. So
I'm turning to you.
It's the Blueberry 350 (1999, I believe, the early slot-loading one,
only came in that color that year), with some additional RAM installed, I
forget how much, running OS 9.0.
Can anyone help? Maybe it's so obvious that *everyone* can help, for
all I know!
