That's the problem. What you or I can get for $3-$5, repair shops will charge 4-5 times more. Depending on the monitor, the H.O.T. can run you into the teens, although the caps shouldn't be more than the prices you stated. As an example, I've fixed a few "Mag", "Magvision" and "Protovision" PC monitors (all made by the same company) and they all use the same H.O.T., which costs $15. They all use the same substandard parts, and usually die just out of warranty. Now, if I were to buy the parts in bulk of 100 pieces or so, I could get them for $10 ea. 1000+, even cheaper. I don't know if a Mac repair shop would fix a monitor, or sub out the work; to address an issue that the original poster mentioned. Usually, they would send the monitor & chassis to a TV guy, or back to the company. But you ake a good point about rip off repair shops. I got charged $100 for a bad CRT socket on my TV, that I had bought two months prior. Parts were covered, but labor wasn't. The guy came out, took the chassis, sent it back to the company, got another one, brought it back, installed it, then billed me $100. Because I was still paying it off and it was under warranty, I couldn't work on it myself. Your millage varies. Best bet is to call around and see what they'd quote you, based on the info you've received. Brian -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
