FWIW: personally, i have always been able to fix stuff without a wipe and reinstall.
But often it has taken me a long time.
if you were in sys 9, i would advise a rebuild of desktop.
i think that there is a similar process for sys 10.
rebuilding the desktop fixes one problem and one problem only - generic or incorrect icons on files. the data previously held in the Desktop Database in now held in user specific 'plist' files. trash the plist in relation to the app that's giving you problems, and you've done about the closest there is to 'rebuilding the desktop database' in OS X as there is.

Well...I thought it had worked. However, this morning, the iMac is continuing to have problems despite DiskWarrior and fsck showing the HD is okay.
I.e. Icons will start to bounce in the dock but then will freeze midbounce
and the entire dock section around that icon will freeze in the magnified
state. The program usually eventually opens but not always.
Also, I will go to open a program and the spinning colored wheel come up but
the program won't actually open at all. This has happened 3 or 4 times
since I ran Disk Warrior.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated !
Am I going to have to bite the bullet and erase the hard drive after all ?
this might be that prebinding needs to be updated, but that's a very very long shot. my guess is actually that Diskwarrior fixed directory structure issues, but some of your OS X system files are munged. Disk Warrior and its kin really just work on the roadmap to WHERE files are (and related information), but can't really know or fix corrupted individual files. the consequences of reinstalling Jaguar are fairly low, compared to the old clean install process in OS 9. I would suggest doing the 'archive and install' option in the OS X installer.
