Yes, sounds like the firmware is screwed, if you cannot get video with an
external monitor then it will probably need a trip to your local Apple
service centre to be sorted out.

NB as the firmware upgrade can run under OS9 it would be a good project for
someone (not me!) to produce a bootable CD that auto-runs the firmware
updater without requiring any user input - anyone want to give it a go ???
