Bravo on this marvelously clear explanation. However:I'm not quite parsing that thoroughly, but I think you want to know how Classic works. Here goes:
Apps in Classic run a little slower compared to booting directly into 9,
but it's not too bad.
This is not true. Apps in Classic tend to run FASTER than if they were booted into OS 9. I have repeatedly tested this with several "big" apps like Photoshop 4 & 6, Quark Xpress 4 and 5, Pagemaker and so on and Classic tends to be 10-25% faster. This may have only started with recent iterations of Jaguar (I never tested before I got Jag), but the myth of Classic can safely be put to bed.
I wish someone had a handy list of this. I went through back in the day and weeded out all the unnecessary stuff, but I can't give you a list of what to turn on and turn off. If anyone knows of such a list (I looked on macosxhints, where I'd expect to find such a thing, but no dice), let us know!It helps to trim down the system folder you use for Classic. Many control panels and extensions are unnecessary, as their functions get routed through to their OSX equivalents.
