cocktail?

I got Cocktail for the iMac flatpanel. Tonight, I ran the Cron scripts, 
and then I read the Help files as thoroughly as I could (because much of 
it is in geek-talk and I don't speak that), but basically, about the 
Cron scripts, it seemed to say that these only need to be run IF the 
computer is shut down every night. If not shutdown, it sez, the computer 
will run its own crons.

Is this true about Cocktail as a whole? That if the iMac is left on all 
night every night, it will run all the necessary tests, including the 
rest of the stuff?

Or does Cocktail offer services that the iMac itself does not?
