Or does Cocktail offer services that the iMac itself does not?

From the cocktail description:

Cocktail is a general purpose utility that simplifies the use of advanced UNIX functions and gives access to hidden Mac OS X settings. Features include:

* update prebinding information

Should never be necessary with 10.2+

* enable or disable journaling ( Journal File System )

Can be done with the CLI, but OS X doesn't provide a mechanism for turning it one via the GUI

* manually run Cron scripts

OS X runs these at scheduled times/dates unless it is shut down.

* repair file and folder permissions

the new "rebuild desktop/reset PRAM" panacea. I've NEVER seen it help, but others seem to think it solves a plethora of ills.

* delete locked or unaccessible items

Can be annoying to do via the GUI sometimes.

* view log files

Available in Apple System Profiler.

* delete archived log files

need the CLI to do it otherwise, althought he log files are rotated out, so not really necessary.

* create symbolic links

Not possible through the GUI otherwise

* change duplex and speed of network card

Not possible through the GUI otherwise

* request new lease from DHCP server

Not possible through the GUI otherwise

* force empty trash

Not possible through the GUI otherwise

* recreate alias to Mac OS 9 desktop

?? not sure why that is needed

* customize look and features of Finder and Dock

Not possible through the GUI otherwise

* easily optimize your system using Auto Pilot

?? Not sure what that means.
