Is there a way to see what is using RAM at any given moment?
In OS 9? Yes -- visit the "About this Mac/About This Computer" item in your Apple Menu.
In OS X this is a non-issue, so you must be using OS 9 or earlier.
I have 1 GB of RAM in an iMac 400 DV. The 10 GB HD is half filled.
In OS 9, having a lot of RAM doesn't really help anything unless you manually go and increase memory ALLOTMENT in the apps you are using. But since you say this used to work, I'm inclined to think it's a false error message.
I've seen FALSE "low memory" warnings with printers that turned out to be a bad temp file or directory that was lingering in the queue. You might want to run DiskWarrior, and check to make sure you have no temp files in the print queue.

"The Mac interface is not 'sexy', and it would be grotesque to want it to be. It is, in fact, playful, often well over the line into frivolity. The bouncing icons (and the puffs of smoke and the pipe-organ speech synthesizer and the way dialogs tidily resize and the drop-shadows on the windows and the jellybean buttons and the eject key on the keyboard) are not individually rationalizable on utilitarian grounds, and they do not pretend they mean to be. They are there to, in aggregate, change the nature of your relationship with the device. They are joyful, and they hope their joy is infectious." -- Glenn McDonald
