Mine (iMac DV) makes the same noise. The stock HD was replaced by a 40 GB
Maxtor and it sounds like a bathroom faucet on low. The hissss type sound.
It's not bad but certainly not great either.

I bought the computer second hand so I don't have anything to compare it to
just assume all IDE HDs are like this.
