Either put OS X on the FIRST partition if you mac is old enough to require that, or else don't partition your disk.
Yes, others will tell you all about the magic and wonder of partitioning, but lemme tell you, for 99.999% of people, partitioning is a silly waste at best and a royal pain in the ass most of the time.
Hear, hear. As I posted elsewhere I had to partition my Wallstreet because of the 8Gb limit. I did figure out how to move the user folders to the second, larger partition. But my wife's computer got messed up and it lost the link to the user folders. I figured out what happened (HD name got munged) and eventually figured out how to fix it. But if I didn't have to partition I wouldn't have had this problem.
