I need to connect two iMacs together using a usb cable to transfer some

AFAIK you can't network tow machine over USB.

If they are both using ethernet to get online are they sharing the same connection? If so, you shuld just be able to copy the files over the ethernet.

Failing that, plug them together with an ethernet cable (a crossover cable if you don't have a mac with an autosensing ethernet port). and transfer the file.
