Yes.  I've done the very same thing on my iMac.

Yes, as far as the hardware is concerned.  You may not have all of the
required s/w installed (esp. the DVD player) but a re-install will fix that.

Difficult, no; as long as you work carefully.  There are some good tutorials
(with pictures) on the web on the basic process.  Here's one:

You have to remove the drive cage, so if you're thinking of upgrading the
hard drive, it's a really good time to do that as well (of course, back up
all your data before attempting any upgrade).  Also, the DVD-ROM drive is
factory hardwired as the master device; which means you have to jumper the
hard drive to be the slave device.
