Hi iMacers, eMacers:

For those of you that have been on the list awhile you'll recall that back in April, I purchased a 15" Flat Panel iMac and after using it for a short time decided I didn't care for it and returned it. Well, I've got another one, this time a 17" Flat Panel iMac/G4 1GHz/256MB RAM/80GB HD/Super Drive/Mac OS X 10.2.8...and before you ask, yes I'm crazy (but in a good way). I'm much happier with this one, I still think it's weird looking, but it's growing on me. Okay, enough back story on to the reasons for my writing.

Is it possible in OS X 10.2.8 (like in OS 8/9) to do a "Get Info" on a folder and find out how many items it contains?

Also, I've been trying to backup my user directory from the Flat Panel iMac to the Bondi Blue iMac (see specs below) using a Ethernet crossover cable but I haven't been having much success.

The first method I tried was using the Finder to copy it over. It first gave me this error message:

The item "allen" contains one or more items you cannot read. Do you want to copy the items you can read? Stop Continue

Why can't they be read? I hit Continue and it went on for a bit before giving me this error message:

You cannot copy the item "NetscapeMozillaTrunkMacOSX2003100716" because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk cannot display. OK

It hit OK and it quit the copy operation. It only copied over 633 items/237.9 MB (247,904,680 bytes) to the Bondi Blue iMac. According to Finder the user directory takes up over 335 MB.

Can anyone offer an explanation of why this didn't/won't work? How to make it work?

I then tried to do the backup using "SilverKeeper v1.1". It said there were 4,937 items/335.1 MB to backup. SilverKeeper seemed to have completed successfully, but the log shows that it only copied 4,900 of 4,923 items/334.7 MB of 335.1 MB.

Any ideas on why SilverKeeper didn't backup everything?

Retrospect doesn't support this Super Drive (Sony DW-U10A), so I can't use it. I was hoping to use the Bondi Blue iMac until I get a FireWire Hard Drive, but that doesn't look like it will work. Any other ideas, besides copying the files one-by-one? =:o
