Hi Rich, iMacers, eMacers:

Um, you can open the folder... It will tell you how many items are in it. Visible, any way.

But is there anyway to show the total number of items in a folder like you can with OS 8.6 by doing a "Get Info"?

As you become more familiar with OS X you'll become aware of the concept of permissions. It's a UNIX thing. It's now an OS X thing. Searching out some info on permissions in general will help.

I have a basic understanding of permissions, but what I don't understand is how/why something in my own user directory cannot be read. Since it's my user directory and I'm the user, shouldn't everything in there be readable?

Can I assume the Bondi you're backing up is using OS 9 or earlier? You may be familiar with the 32 (it is 32, right?) character naming limit in the classic Mac OS. There're also a few forbidden naming conventions, albeit at the moment I can't recall all of them. (The forbidden names are different in OS 9 & X, of course). Not having done it, I can't tell you whether OS 9 is willing truncate names that are too long or simply reject them.

The Bondi is running OS 8.6. I believe the file name limitation with OS 9 and earlier is 31 characters. So any file on the FP iMac under OS 10.2.8 which has a file name over 31 characters long won't be able to be backed up to the Bondi running OS 8.6. That's not what I wanted to hear. :(

Good luck. You'll pick all this up as you make the transition. We hope ;-p

Thanks. I hope so, too! :)
