Just received news that college daughter's iMac G3 fried the power supply,

Since I'm not technically oriented, I need some
help. Given that what the tech said, the hard drive is okay, but it would
basically be cheaper and more sensible to get her a new computer than grub
up new parts and salvage this one. Is this sensible?

Absolutely. Have the tech REMOVE the hard drive from the dead iMac and send it to you. You buy an external FW hard drive case and stick the drive in that. Plug it into the new machine (make sure it has FW ports, of course) and you're back with no data loss.


As for good deals on Macs, check around the LEM Swap list, MegaMacs.com often has good deals -- SmallDog (a list supporter!) I like a great deal, and remember: dealmac.com is your friend.
