The data can then be either burnt to CD or copied via ethernet to another Mac. If your daughter has a friend with a similar Mac ok, if not I'm sure the Tech that diagnosed the problem would assist. At home I keep an external Firewire drive box, always with its casing off, for accessing drives. I'd then connect to my iMac and burn the data to CD. Firewire cases aren't expensive, and with the old iMac hard disk in one it would make a useful backup device. Re repairing the old iMac, a lot depends upon how old and what model it is, and how much you are quoted for repairing compared to the replacement cost.
