The 2Wire modem is also a firewall and a router. It's a little more expensive than regular DSL which only supports ONE computer, but it's WELL worth it to me. The two Macs always on the network are a G4 dual 1 gig tower and a G4 17" iMac. No need for extra ethernet cards, etc.
Hope this helps,

I am thinking of using a imac running a firewall to receive the connection, then share it via ethernet to my other Macs
Not the answer that you want to hear, but you usually need a computer with
two Ethernet ports to make a good firewall/router. One connected to your
ADSL "modem" and one connected to your LAN. I don't know if there is such a
thing as a Mac compatible USB to Ethernet adapter (or FireWire to Ethernet)
but that's what you'd need to get two Ethernet ports.
