For me, I have had less problems on both my iMac and iBook than before. In the panel that comes up, check Fast User Switching. Then your name should appear at the top right of the screen, and you can access the other users from there. If your iMac - I don't remember which one it is you have - is Quartz Extreme-capable, you will get the cube when changing users.
