It may depend on the brand, but I have successfully connected USB drives to beige G3s running 8.6.
It's good to know that it's possible. Some of the external hard drives list 8.6 as an older system requirement, but many list 9.x as the oldest, but I suspect that may be more to do with the included software than the OS.
IIRC you cannot boot an iMac from a USB drive. (Certainly my iMac 350 would not consider booting from my USB drive.)
I knew that FireWire drives were bootable but didn't know about USB drives. My Bondi won't boot from my USB Sony Spressa CD-RW drive, but I believe that's because the drivers for it load after the system boots. Do you need drivers for a USB drive?
Just be aware that going through USB can make access to a large drive a s-l-o-w process. I have a 20G USB drive and don't think I'd enjoy using a bigger one.
Based on the speed of the Spressa drive, I figured that would be the case. I asked about the size limitation because I know that there's a limitation on internal drives (120GB I think) and was wondering if the same applied to an external drive. Does the 120GB apply to a USB drive?
Well, it can be convenient to be able to use the same drive with your different computers.
I wouldn't use it regularly with the Bondi, but thought it would be handy to have it for emergency situations (or for use with the in-laws Tangerine). Since neither have FireWire, I was interested in whether or not getting a Combo external drive would be beneficial to these USB only Macs.
