Hi Chas, iMacers, eMacers:

Your iMac cannot use USB 2, so this is not an option for you.

Why? Isn't USB 2.0 backwardly compatible with 1.1?

Since, my Bondi Blue iMac only has OS 8.6 and USB
1.1, I was wondering if one of these drives would be usable with it.

Short answer: no.

Did you see Beverly Woods message? She said it would be. Which is the correct answer?

Yes, but it would take so long that you'd be dead and buried before it's finished. Too sllllloooooooowwww.

I understand it would be slow, but in an emergency situation I'd be willing to wait. That's probably the only time I'd use it with the Bondi anyway.

Same as on the FW one -- 137MB max (iow, buy a 120GB drive or smaller). That's a function of the HD controller chip on the motherboard, not the connection method.

I knew that was the case with an internal drive, but didn't know if it applied to a USB drive. Now I know. I believe that an external FireWire drive can surpass this limit because of the Oxford 911 or 922 bridge.

I don't think you can add USB 2 to it anyway.

I wasn't even considering that option. I'm keeping it around as a backup computer (if so needed) and for sentimental reasons. Don't really need it for anything else.

Yes, there's some benefit -- you can sell the drive (or at least the case) to a PC user when you're done with it. :)

Having lived through Betamax/VHS and Apple/Wintel seeing Apple adding USB 2.0 to new Macs, I'm not so sure what the future holds for FireWire. Yeah, I know it's better/faster but that doesn't ensure it's dominance among the Wal-mart shopping/Wintel using masses. Maybe USB 2.0 will become dominant over FireWire 400, who can say.
