That's not a rhetorical question; I don't know the answer. I'm thinking of
apps like Internet Explorer, where the Windows and Mac versions have AFAIK
little in common but the name.

Indeed. I couldn't agree more. The same is also true of Word, also used in the MacWorld benchmark. The XP version and the Mac version have so little in common it's almost a joke to call them the same program.
