Seems you need to use text format only. All other
styles/formats will be bounced back.

If you are using Mail, go to its Preferences>Composing, and make sure that "Plain Text" is selected.

If using Eudora, go to Special>Settings>Styled Text, and select "Send plain text mail only"

If using Mac AOL 10.x, you're out of luck as it uses only HTML mail. However, the version for Classic, 5.x, uses only plain text, and if you go through webmail.aol.com, I believe that you can select plain or html.

I don't know what Outlook & Entourage can do as I don't use M$ garbage.

I also don't use the defunct Netscape Communicator, so I don't know what its capabilities were.
