My 17" FP makes two strange noises, one is a groaning noise that lasts about a 2 seconds. Hard to say how often it does it, maybe every hour or so. I think it could be the hard drive re-calibrating. It could also be the kernel updating some files. The other noise is a mechanical click, also sounding like something to do with the hard drive. Sometimes the click follows the groan. I guess I should take it in, but I can't do without my Mac for days (I assume it would take days). I was a little dismayed to see that my Mac has an IBM drive. I haven't trusted IBM drives since years ago when one of IBM's drive manufacturers produced some notoriously crappy drives. (Could have been Quantum, but seems like it started with a C, and not Conner.0 Of course that was in my PC days.
Then there's my LaCie external. It was whisper quiet before I stowed it in my sock drawer while on vacation. Now it's kind of loud. LaCie says, "send it in." Okay, so what do I back it up on, 35 DVDs? I'm going to call them about doing a cross-ship.

Needless to say, I'm getting more and more frustrated here. The strange noise issue is declared 'not serious' but 'abnormal' by Apple. Wonderful.
