I tried the option key - it didn't work...
I read somewhere that I should go to the control panel and choose system 9.1 off the dw cd as the start up disk. I can see both the system x and 9.1 folders - but even though I'm choosing 9.1 - it looks like it still tries to boot into X - and gets stuck

Yeah, I ran into to that same situation on a G4.....not sure how to
force a startup on the DW disk in OS 9....

as a long shot, when it boots from the DW CD hold down the x key....

this might show you the different systems that you can boot into....


That will actually force you to boot into an X system. If you hold down the
"option" key it will show all valid system folders and allow you to choose
the one that you want to boot with.
