I was successful in getting a Rev A to accept two 256 MB cards for total
of 512 MB. So it may be possible to get the Rev D to do the same.

Things I discovered on my quest to 512 MB.

1: Apple specs that the chips should be x64, however, many newer 256 MB
SODIMM chips are x8. I didn't get to play with any of the x8 chips, but
I'm guessing that may be a source of some of the problems people have had.

2: One of my Rev A CPU cards has metal hold down tabs for the SODIMMs.
The 256 MB cards have the chips mounted so close to the side of the card
that the metal tabs touched the pins on the chips. When that happened,
the card would no longer be seen by the iMac (but did not result in any
kind of error, it was just treated as if no card was installed). A small
peice of electrical tape solved that problem. I suspect this may be the
source of why some people can get 256 chips to be recognized and other
people can not. (both my CPU cards with plastic tabs took the cards
without incident).
