The minimum would be to add a 256 MB SODIMM, I think, but I doubt that you'd
get good performance.

I have the same model iMac (though with 96 MB RAM rather than the measly 32
it shipped with) and recently considered the same question. My conclusion
was basically what Chas Martin says: if I maxed out the RAM and replaced the
hard drive -- I'm not even sure I could change the module in the lower RAM
slot myself, so there would be labour costs to factor in -- I'd have spent a
significant chunk of change that would be better put towards the cost of a
new Mac. Add a Sonnet upgrade card (which would also give me Firewire) and I
would have *exceeded* the cost of a new eMac.

So, FWIW, I intend to save my pennies, give the Rev D a bit more memory
(that 96 megs seemed like overkill in 1999 -- tempus fugit) and let it go on
running OS 9, which it does in sprightly fashion. For some things, such as
.Mac or the iTunes Music Store, I'll need OS X: but I'll be running that on
newer hardware. I don't think you can really expect to run a 2003 operating
system efficiently on a 1999 machine.
