You are almost describing my set-up! I have an iMac DV 400 (Blueberry). I bought an ACOMdata 120 GB external HD from CompUSA. I did not have OS X. With 9.2.2 on my iMac, I formatted the external with six partitions (I'm not sure why I picked six.) It was very easy to do. I think I just plugged in the external drive and then followed the prompts. Later, I bought Jaguar, and loaded it to one of those partitions (NOT to my iMac). I played around with iMovie on that partition. Finally, about a month ago, I bought Panther. I backed up my iMac onto the external HD, completely reformatted the iMac with 9.2.2, and added Panther. I have yet to put Panther on my external, but I plan to put it on another one of those partitions. I haven't decided yet whether I will install it from the disk or use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my iMac, because I'm still not clear from CCC's directions exactly what I need to do.
I put off doing this because I didn't realize how easy it was to access 9.2.2 files from X. I thought it would be a big hassle, so I put off "switching" to X. I thought I'd have to do a lot of rebooting. Since I did buy the OS X version of AppleWorks, everything has been almost seamless. The only regret I have is loosing all of my e-mails, e-mail addresses, and browser bookmarks. It seems that they should be on my backup on the external HD, but I can't find how to access them. I'm using Safari and Mail, but when I try to access my old information, Outlook Express and Explorer open newly-installed versions on my iMac (from my reformatting) rather than opening the backup versions from my external HD.
Actually, another hassle has been waiting for Microtek (scanner) and Fantom Drives (CD burner) to come up with Panther drivers. I found the drivers for my HP and Canon printers on the internet. The digital cameras did not need updated drivers because iPhoto is all I needed.
Go for it! Claire

I just purchased an 80 gig external firewire hard drive. I am currently
running 9.2.2 on my iMac 400 dv 128 ram. On a search I read that you can't
partition an external drive in OS 9. Is this fact? I was hoping to later get
OS 10 but not right away. Are there any free utilities that will partition
an external drive? I didn't open the box yet to see what the software is.
It's an ACOM data and it says it comes with drive setup software for the
Mac.
