Jay: There is a safe way to do this. You missed the top option in the box, "Install Mac OS X Installs OS X for the first time." Do NOT use the options below that: Archive And Install or Erase And Install. But you need to read the instructions. In the box along with the CD-ROM is a little book called "Mac OS X Panther v10.3 Installation and Setup Guide." See the top figure on page 4, and then the middle of page 8. Hope this helps with the comfort level.
