I have Cox too, I used their "self install kit" and it just came with a plain old splitter and 25 feet of coax cable. I have gotten perfect TV reception from the same cable that goes to the cable modem. But, at my parents' house, where they had Comcast (previously ATTBI, previously MediaOne) do the installation, they DID install a filter on the line to the cable modem. I haven't tried using a TV on the data side or the modem on the TV side there. So, I think it can probably vary whether you can use a TV/VCR/TV tuner card on the same line as your cable modem.
