If you can bare to stick with it for a bit open 'Terminal' (/Applications/Utilities) and type in 'top' and hit enter. you might want to open the Terminal window out a bit to fill maybe half the screen.
This will tell you if anything is hogging the CPU time. If you can at least identify the name of the task and post it here we might be able to diagnose it for you. In the mean time, have you tried all Apple's standard diagnosis suggestions, such as 'Repair Permissions' and 'Disk Utility'...?
